For the first Toku Tuesday of 2014, I figured it would best to post the first promo for the new Super Sentai of 2014: Ressha Sentai Tokkyuger.
It’s way too early to make any judgment calls, but I definitely don’t like the suits. They may grow on me over time, but right now, I find them hideous. The motif is strong, though. While there have been trains used as gattai before (MagiShine’s Travelion and the Ancient Engines K-Line, T-Line, and Kishamoth), trains haven’t been the main concept. Toei has been fairly experimental with their motifs in recent years, introducing samurai, pirates, and angels to their list of inspirations while adding interesting twists to the reused ideas (self-aware cars that are also everyday companions and battery-powered dinosaurs), but I think the only reason it took this long to add trains to the motif list is the success of Kamen Rider Den-O.
At the time of this writing, I don’t have any specifics on the show, but I believe one of the writers of Timeranger and a director of Shinkenger are spearheading this series. Both are strong series, so hopefully Tokkyuger can live up to its pedigree.
